Starbucks once seemed to have a monopoly on coffee shops in most cities. However, recently more and more shops started opening giving Starbucks a run for its money. One of these competitors had its start in 2016 through retail only.
is a veteran-owned and operated coffee company that started in 2016 shipping out its unique coffee from a warehouse. The business grew over the years from hard work, dedication, and a positive culture. Black Rifle Coffee Company also grew through posting funny videos on YouTube which expanded its fan base. In 2021, the company opened coffee shops in Temple and Harker Heights, Texas. The next year Black Rifle Coffee Company had a grand opening in Killeen, Texas. Another coffee company that popped up in Central Texas in the last few years is Dutch Bros Coffee.
was founded in 1992 where it served coffee near the railroad tracks out of a pushcart. The company was based in Oregon and started growing in 2000 when it added more locations. In 2021, Dutch Bros Coffee opened shops in Texas introducing us to their kind culture of Broristas and unique coffee, energy drinks, and teas. Temple and Killeen had Dutch Bros first in 2021 and just this year another location in Harker Heights, Texas opened. Black Rifle Coffee Company and Dutch Bros Coffee are the two popular coffee shops in Central Texas, but some notable gems are sometimes overlooked.
In the Temple Mall, there is a small coffee shop called Peggy’s Coffee House. This local coffee shop has coffee drinks inspired by Harry Potter Butter Beer which is a butterscotch-flavored coffee mixture that can be made hot or cold with or without espresso shots. They also offer Death Wish Coffee which is an incredibly strong coffee. Along with the company’s unique coffee creations, the shop has a store with items catering to nerd culture and coffee enthusiasts alike. Another local coffee shop that may have gone unnoticed is a shop called Summer Moon.
is a family-owned and operated coffee shop in Texas that started in 2002. The first locations were in the Austin and San Antonio areas, but last year they opened a small location in Belton, Texas. Located right outside of Walmart, Summer Moon Coffee worked out of a nice food truck-type shop it had nice outdoor seating at picnic tables and provided outdoor games. It quickly grew in popularity in Central Texas due to the unique sweet milk this coffee shop uses as a creamer. Two weeks ago Summer Moon Coffee opened a location in Temple off of Adams Avenue.
